Clerk hopes to go full-time

DeKalb City Clerk Liz Peerboom is looking to work full time for the city.

Peerboom was sworn in as the city clerk of DeKalb May 9. She has also been serving as the city clerk of Maple Park since 2011.

Peerboom said she would like to see City Council make her position full time again. The DeKalb city clerk position is a part-time position with an annual salary of $5,000. Her responsibilities as city clerk include record keeping, revisions and distributions of DeKalb’s municipal code, managing Freedom of Information Act requests and being keeper of the city seal.

She said she wants to have more responsibilities.

“I plan on talking to the mayor and some of the council members and see what their thoughts are on the future of the clerk’s office,” Peerboom said.

Peerboom grew up in DeKalb. She is working toward her associate’s degree in office systems at Kishwaukee College.

“[DeKalb is] a large enough city that it has all the amenities, shopping, groceries, but yet it’s still got the small-town feel,” Peerboom said.

Before becoming DeKalb’s city clerk, Peerboom worked for the city for 19 years. Some of her previous positions included being a secretary in the Department of Public Works and deputy city clerk.

“I missed all the people that I worked with before, it was like a family,” Peerboom said. “Even though I’m not full time, I still see them a lot more than I did when I wasn’t working here.”
