Students show talent at welcome back event

People flexed their vocal muscles at the Recreation Center Saturday night.

“Rock Tha’ Mic” is an annual talent show that is held the first weekend before school starts. The talent show is run by the Asian American Resource Center in a joint effort with Student Involvement & Leadership Development and Student Affairs & Enrollment Management.

Three emcees from the University of Wisconsin started the show off on a high note with a spoken word rap about being who you are and not what you are.

One of the first songs started off shaky as the performer stumbled her words and had to restart a few times. She finished strong at the end, hitting her notes and staying on track.

The next performance was a poem/rap by alumnus Ulysses Diaz.

“[I am] surprised; there was a lot of people here,” Ulyssus said. “I’m excited people are getting involved on campus.”

Senior sociology major Darren Howard performed a rap with a natural approach.

A significant portion of the audience decided to leave only three or four acts into the show, but the performances continued.

“[The performers] displayed the different dynamics of the university,” Howard said.
