Three summer DVDs you must buy

By Patrick Pastrana

This summer’s range of successful DVDs could be your savior from a long trip.

“A Good Day to Die Hard” features Bruce Willis as the memorable Detective John McClane. McClane continues to fight off bad guys, but this time in Russia. He travels to Russia to help his estranged son, Jack, who was arrested for murder. Soon after they meet, John finds out his son has been working for the CIA and decides to assist him with a mission. This “Die Hard” has a different vibe from the others because McClane is really trying to reconnect with his son. The improbable victories McClane achieves are funny and enjoyable, as usual. There are rumors of a sixth installment to the series, but only time will tell.

“Jack the Giant Slayer” is a movie based on Jack and the beanstalk. The story focuses on Jack, who befriends a princess. Soon after becoming acquainted, Jack must save the princess from giants who live above the clouds.

At the same time, a traitor of the kingdom enslaves all the giants to plan an attack on the kingdom. I enjoyed “Jack the Giant Slayer” very much, despite it being a children’s story. The battle scenes were nothing less than epic. The story might have been predictable, but the pace was perfect. No matter your age, fairytales never get too old to watch.

“42” is a sports biography of one of the most famous baseball players of all time: Jackie Robinson. Robinson was the first black man to play in Major League Baseball. The story follows the legendary baseball player and the struggles he endured to achieve success.

The film portrays the attitude of the 1940’s, involving prejudice, discrimination and racism, the main obstacles for Robinson. “42” is very well written, and it has an amazing cast that includes Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford. We can learn a lot about perseverance and willpower from movies like this.
