DeKalb Public Library to host ‘Star Wars’ event

The force is strong with DeKalb Public Library, which will be decking out the book stacks with the latest gear from Tatooine and going full-on geek for its upcoming Star Wars event.

A Star Wars extravaganza will be hosted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 20 at the DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St., and the staff is excited to have community support to fund the event.

“We got some money from AT&T to help make it happen,” said teen section librarian Steven Torres-Roman.

The money was donated in part to the event and in part to the library in general, Roman said.

“We noticed a couple others libraries were doing something similar and there was a great turnout,” Roman said. “Who doesn’t love Star Wars?”

There will be plenty to do and circulation clerk Darcy Tatlock said the event is open to everyone: NIU students, adults and kids.

“Some of the activities are a costume contest, a bunch of crafts, and a Star Wars passport where you can enter your name into a drawing,” Roman said. “There will also be a collection of Star Wars memorabilia.”

The library is not big enough for all of the events planned for the extravaganza, Tatlock said.

“The event will be at the Egyptian assuming everything moves forward as anticipated,” said Heather Carr, membership and marketing director of the Egyptian Theater, 135 N. Second St. “The details of the event are not completely nailed down. We will be meeting with the librarians in the coming weeks.”

Tatlock said the event is scheduled to take place in the Egyptian Theatre and in the DeKalb Public Library.

“Anyone who is a fan of Star Wars is invited to come,” Tatlock said.
