Downtown Sycamore to host warm events this weekend

Sizzlin’ in the Snow is being held in downtown Sycamore this weekend to bring some summer flair to the winter months.

The merchants of downtown Sycamore are hosting a summer-themed series of events from Friday to Sunday. The idea for the event was created by Daryl Hopper of the Sycamore State Theater, 420 W. State St.. She said she proposed the idea to the group and then they began coordinating the event.

“I don’t like January, but enjoy summer,” Hopper said. “I’ve heard about people doing Christmas in July events, so I figured we should do a summer in January event.”

Indoor sales and events throughout the weekend include a $2 movie showing twice a day of Wreck-It-Ralph at the theater, savings at Sweet Earth Jewelry and Gifts, 341 W. State St., and at Glass Gardens Inc., 215 W. State St., and more.

Made Just For You Gifts, 338 W. State St., will be giving out free samples of strawberry lemonade and vegetable dips. Marcia Elliott, owner of Made Just For You, said the business will also be participating in Bridgewater Candle Company’s “light a candle, feed a child” program.

“For every jar candle that is sold, donations will go to Operation Rice Bowl and will feed one orphan a day,” Elliot said. “The consumer who buys the candle will receive a free special edition votive.”

Sue Riccardi, owner of Riccardi’s Red Hots & Soda Fountain, 418 W. State St., said her business will be holding a milkshake tasting for participants on Sunday. The tasting will cost $12 for adults and $8 for children. Some of the proceeds from the shake tasting will go to Feed’em Soup, Riccardi said.

“People will be able to try out a variety of 3 ounce milkshakes,” Riccardi said. “We will also be offering a few appetizers as well as a deep fried pickle, mac ’n’ cheese and more.”
