What does Homecoming mean to you?

I’ve never directly participated in Homecoming. I’ve never watched the game, except inattentively on a television in my peripheral. I’ve never voted for one of the unfamiliar faces in the Homecoming Court. I’ve never rep’d muh step. I’ve never yelled like hell.

My indifference is similar to that of my high school homecoming, which is strange because I now look back fondly on its ill-fitting suits, bonfires and bleachers, memories I loathed at the time. So each year, I feel a sense of anticipatory nostalgia, concluding that someday my receding hairline will return to DeKalb and say, “Damn, I loved homecoming.”

Whenever I imagine Homecoming every fall, I think of an awesome football game that keeps me on the edge of my seat the entire time and a halftime show that blows me away. It’s the excitement of just being always a little ahead of the opponent, of making every wish and every plea to any and every god that the next throw will be intercepted. Then I hear the cheering of all the other Huskies in the stadium and I get chills. It’s the sense of camaraderie that we are all pushing for the same thing: to win. Happy Homecoming, NIU.

To be honest, I’m not really sure what Homecoming is in college. The word brings to mind football, parades, dresses and high school girls whining about finishing their volleyball tournaments in time to get their hair and nails done. For me, Homecoming brings back awkward memories of posing for pictures with dates that needed to be baby-sat. I do, however, miss Spirit Week from high school: five days of dressing up in theme costumes and the school colors for the sake of the Homecoming game. I’m new at NIU, but if our university has dress-up days, I’d be very interested.

Homecoming is a week each October when everyone is psyched to be a Huskie. Granted, this will only be the second NIU Homecoming I’ve been a part of, but I had an awesome time last year, so I’m looking forward to this one. It’s a time to make friends and be silly, show your pride and yell it out loud because no one is going to put you down. There are events and parties everywhere, and all are welcome. This is the week I made most of my friends last year and had one hell of a time. Let’s go, Huskies!
