Mark Montgomery nabbed the fifth member of his 2012-13 recruiting class.

The NIU men’s basketball coach announced Thursday Travon Baker of Detroit Consortium signed his letter of intent to join the program.

“We are excited to have Travon join us and become the fifth member of our incoming class,” Montgomery said in a press release. “Travon is a true point guard who has been a four-year starter in high school. He is a jet-quick, floor general that impacts the game on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. I look forward to coaching him and having him become a part of the Huskie family.”

The Detroit, Mich. native helped lead his squad to an 18-5 record, along with an appearance in the state regional final. Baker earned Class C All-State First Team honors from The Associated Press, Detroit Free Press and Detroit News. He averaged 16 points, 13 assists, six rebounds and five steals in his senior year.

Baker joins fellow freshman Daveon Balls (Lawrence North), Darrell Bowie (Wautwatosa East/La Jolla Prep, Calif.), Mike Davis (Ohio/Garfield Heights) and Sam Mader (Appleton East) for the Huskies’ upcoming freshman class.
