DeKalb public library holds mock archaeological dig for children

The Dekalb Public Library, 309 Oak St., held a mock archaeological dig for children Tuesday night.Jeremy VanDerpluymChildren dug through small boxes of sand in hopes of Children various treasures hidden within.

“We used objects found around the library like seashells and egg cartons,” said circulation clerk Darcy Tatlock.

After digging up a few objects and cleaning them with a small brush, the children recorded and drew pictures of their haul.

“We look in the boxes, we take the things and then we make drawings,” said Sadie Stiely, a young participant. “I found some sticks and shells and this wood thing.”

This mock archaeological dig was apart of the Dekalb Public Library’s weekly series of Tuesday children’s craft events.

“We have bilingual crafts every Tuesday, and other children’s events at least one other day a week,” Tatlock said.

The next children’s craft event at the library will be Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. Children will make a back-to-school notebook to help them stay organized for the new year. This event is for all ages and requires no previous sign-up, according to the library’s website.
