DeKALB | DeKalb has a variety of activities planned for Mother’s Day celebrations this year.

At the Midwest Museum of Natural History, 425 W State St., mothers and grandmothers receive free admission to the museum from 12 to 5 p.m on May 8. Bethany Donovan, guest services representative at MMNH, said this is their way of reaching out to the community.

“This is our way of … celebrating such a wonderful holiday, and all our moms,” Donovan said.

Margret Schrant, owner of Dairy Dogs, 675 E. State St., said they are also having a discount for Mother’s Day.

“We are having a half off sale on any sundaes,” Schrant said.

Schrant said they are also planning to offer a discount for similar holidays like Father’s Day.

Michelle Schultz, owner of Kar-Fre Flowers, said the holiday brings added business.

“This will probably be one of the bigger, more successful [Mother’s Days],” Schultz said.

Students are also celebrating the holiday. Freshman nursing major Kelsey Vazquez said she is celebrating Mother’s Day on an earlier date due to school.

Kevin Sundell, freshmen mechanical engineering major, said he is seeing his mother on the very day.

“My mom is coming here and we’re going out to lunch,” Sundell said.
