Three men arrested in BB gun shooting

Three Naperville men were arrested Monday for allegedly firing a BB gun out of their apartment window, hitting a car and a person walking by, police said.

At 5:30 p.m., the victim was walking on Annie Glidden Road near University Heights, 1100 Varsity Blvd., when they were shot in the back with BB pellets. The victim then ducked behind a tree and saw people continuing to shoot BBs at him from the window of a University Heights apartment, said DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler. The shooters also shot at a car driving southbound on Annie Glidden Road, breaking the front passenger window, Spangler said.

Police went to the apartment, University Heights 230, and found the three men inside, along with a BB gun pistol. One of the suspects told police they were shooting out the window to see how far it would travel and were only shooting cans inside the apartment, Spangler said.

Police arrested Bryan L. Davis, Jonathan A. Strevell and Ryan Novak, all 20, and charged them with reckless conduct and criminal damage to property.

The victim walking down the street suffered minor injuries which did not require medical treatment, and the driver of the damaged vehicle was not injured, Spangler said.

Three NIU students were previously arrested Nov. 21 for allegedly firing a BB gun out of a window at a bus stopping near the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity house, 1300 Blackhawk Drive. After the shooting, one victim was bleeding after being shot in the neck, and another person who was on the bus was shot in the right shoulder. The three suspects involved were later found to be members of the fraternity.

“We could get a few in a short period,” Spangler said. “Without looking back, I couldn’t tell if it’s becoming more common. Pretty much every year we’re getting a similar incident. We do get them in other parts of town too; mostly young people end up being the perpetrators of this.”
