City candidates join community in forum

Wednesday night, the candidates for the offices in the City of DeKalb met in a forum to discuss important city issues.

Eleven candidates were in attendance at the forum: mayoral candidates Kris Povlsen, Lynn Fazekas and Paul Kallembach; Second Ward candidates Tom Teresinski and Bob Carlson; Fourth Ward candidates Brendon Gallagher and John Anderson; and for the Sixth Ward Craig Roman, Jared Lash, Eugene Smith and Dave Baker.

Numerous DeKalb residents were in attendance to learn more about their prospective alderpersons and mayor.

Unlike other forums, the candidates were not aware of the questions that were to be asked beforehand.

The questions asked included the candidates’ stances on Home Rule, whether NIU students should have to help fund the possible new police station and if the candidates thought the city was being fiscally responsible.

The forum was put on by the Northern Star and the Student Association to help students become aware of what is happening within the city government.

The candidates expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to introduce themselves to the NIU community.

Sixth ward candidate Eugene Smith was very much in favor of continuing the forums.

“This should be one of the things the city puts on,” Smith said.

The DeKalb Consolidated Election is April 7.

Sixth Ward candidate Craig Roman was thankful for the opportunity to vote in the elections.

“The great thing about our government is every four years we have the loudest voice of all,” Roman said.
