An NIU student was arrested for allegedly battering her boyfriend and damaging his property at Grant South.

Lt. Todd Henert said the University Police were notified of the situation after receiving phone calls from both parties within seconds of each other Sunday night.

The student, Raqueal A. Gladney, 19, of Harvey, allegedly damaged her boyfriend’s cell phone and laptop. She also allegedly wounded him in the head, and scratched his arm. Henert said the boyfriend did not require medical attention.

Officers booked Gladney at the NIU Police Department, where she was later transported to the DeKalb County Jail.

While arguments between couples are normal, Henert said a person should seek help if their partner becomes violent.

“If they’re in public, they need to get others’ attention so that others can call 911 in case they can’t,” Henert said. The person also has the right to defend themselves in case their partner attacks them, he added.
