Local house destroyed in fire, leaves family safe

No one was injured in an attached garage and house fire at the intersection of Ridge Road and Pickwick Lane Thursday night.

At about 6:30 p.m., the DeKalb Fire Department was called to 1701 Pickwick Lane for a general alarm fire. The fire is believed to have started in the garage, spread up to the garage’s attic and then to the attic of the house, said DeKalb Fire Chief Bruce Harrison.

The fire was under control after about 20 minutes, Harrison said, and firefighters stayed on scene for a few hours afterward to check the insulation which is prone to hold fire.

Firefighters broke a hole on the roof of the house to help ventilate the smoke to combat the fire, Harrison said.

A resident of the house had welding tools, such as compressed gas, stored in the garage, but it is not believed they contributed to the fire, Harrison said.

The DeKalb County Chapter of the American Red Cross was on the scene Thursday night to help the residents, Harrison said, who expects the family may be displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire was unknown as of 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and no damage estimates were available as of press time.
