Attempted robbery on Lincoln Highway not just a failure, but a blunder

By ALAN EDRINN

A woman was robbed Tuesday morning in a parking lot at 1010 W. Lincoln Highway while leaving her apartment, police said.

At 10:50 a.m. the woman was walking from her apartment on foot through the parking lot when she noticed the suspect walking north where she was traveling. The woman continued walking and stayed about 10 feet behind the man until she reached the north end of the parking lot, at which point the man turned around quickly and approached her, according to DeKalb Police reports. The suspect then reached into her coat pocket and attempted to reach into her pants pocket. The woman then screamed and walked away, at which point the man ran east out of sight, according to reports.

The woman had never seen the man before and did not know who the person was, according to reports.

The victim was also carrying a bag, but the suspect did not try and take it, said DeKalb Police Sgt. Bob Redel. The victim was not injured, Redel said, and nothing was taken in the robbery.

Police are still investigating the case and trying to determine what the man was after.

“Without anything being said, it is hard to know what this guy was trying to do,” Redel said. “Unless he’s looking for a few dollars, he is not going to find much in someone’s jacket pocket.”

Investigators believe, because he went through the woman’s pockets, he was trying to take something, Redel said. This attempted robbery has been atypical from others previously reported, where the suspect has asked the victim for change or started a conversation before trying to take something, Redel said.

The suspect is described as a black man, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a normal build between 20 and 22 years old. He was wearing a hoodie and a knit cap at the time of the robbery.
