KCH looks for college volunteers

Kishwaukee Community Hospital is looking for committed college volunteers.

KCH, 1 Kish Hospital Drive, has over 300 volunteers, 30 of which are college students.

“Most students want exposure to a hospital environment for their major,” said Paula von Ende, director of Volunteer Services at KCH.

“As a nursing major I think it is important to spend as much time as possible in a health care setting,” said junior nursing major Yesenia Rodriguez. “You can always learn from simply being there, but if you let people know your major you may get the chance to gain some great work experience.”

Freshman Marie Rufer, also a nursing major, agrees with Rodriguez.

“I think that volunteering is the best way to really find out what you want to do in the medical field,” Rufer said.

There are several opportunities throughout the hospital for students and the community alike to volunteer. This includes, but is not limited to, the Cancer Care Center, the physical therapy center and the Green Leaf Gift Shop.

“All volunteers need to commit to one semester of volunteering once a week for a recommendation,” von Ende said.
