CAB casino night, comedy event to highlight weekend

By Michael McVey

Family values may suddenly become an “in” thing this weekend, so might family entertainment.

The Campus Activities Board, according to Special Events Coordinator Amy Kozlowski, will be sponsoring a casino night Friday, a comedy show Saturday and an arts and crafts fair Sunday, all in the Holmes Student Center.

The casino night will be held at 8 p.m. Friday in the Duke Ellington Ballroom. Games will include craps, poker, bingo, chuck-a-luck, roulette and blackjack. Kozlowski said the CAB has a state permit for this event, and chips instead of money will be awarded as prizes. After the event, prizes will be auctioned, giving winners a chance to spend the chips.

Admission is $3 for students and $5 for non-students.

Dan Horn, a ventriloquist, will be presenting a comedy routine at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Ballroom. Horn has appeared on VH-1, Showtime, An Evening at the Improv and Comedy Central. He has also been nominated for several comedy awards.

According to a brochure from Dancing Bear Productions in Port Washington, NY, the National Association of Campus Activities nominated Horn as Comedy Campus Entertainer of the year in the 1993 Campus Entertainers Association (CEA) awards. Vent Haven Museum, Inc. nominated Horn for the 1992 Ventriloquist of the Year Award.

Horn has been performing as a professional puppeteer and ventriloquist for 14 years. For the last seven years he has traveled to comedy clubs, campuses, casinos, conventions and cruise liners. Horn performs with a cast of several puppets instead of just one, so it becomes difficult to remember there is only one actual performer.

Admission to the comedy show is $5 for students and $7 for non-students.

The arts and crafts fair, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Promenade Lounge, will give students a chance to buy arts and crafts from local artisans.

Other Family Weekend activities include candlelight bowling at the Huskies Den, a pre-game champagne brunch at 9:30 and 11 a.m. Saturday in the skyroom and the CAB movie “Aladdin” at 7 and 10 p.m. Saturday in Sandburg Auditorium.

Students are invited to attend and bring their families to all events. Information is available by calling the CAB office at 753-1580.
