DeKalb experiences the chills

By MICHAEL VAN DER HARST

Although the temperature will stay above zero degrees, the DeKalb area is bracing for yet another chill this week.

NIU staff meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste predicts high temperatures around 10 degrees for Thursday.

“With wind chills between 20 and 30 degrees below zero, you’ll need all the help you can get [to stay warm],” he said.

Hats, scarves and gloves will be helpful but may not be enough.

“Multiple layers of clothing is better than just one,” he said.

Sebenste warns students to keep their coats and sweatshirts free from any moisture, sweat or snow.

“If wet, the insulation of the coats becomes useless,” he said.

Temperatures are not expected to rise again until Saturday, when Sebenste predicts they will reach freezing.

Snow is also expected throughout the week leading up to Saturday’s warming.

“We’ve been snowier than the past six winters,” he said. “We will wind up with a January snowfall that’s above average.”
