Unwind by winding up with yoga class

All the stress from classes, deadlines and your social life melt away during Tuesday night yoga class offered at the student recreation center.

Students looking for a way to detach themselves from the hectic schedules and challenging coursework of school are able attend yoga classes on campus for a cost of $40 per semester.

Yoga students will find themselves zoning out and feeling their stress melt away as they become surrounded by a calming presence and relaxing music in the background.

The poses and stretches that are performed are all explained in detail by the instructor and can be done by even the least flexible individual.

Britani Holmes, a freshman Spanish education major who had intensive knee surgery less than four months ago, found the class effective.

“It was relaxing and invigorating at the same time. It gave me a sense of peace during a hectic day,” Holmes said.

Aside from being relaxing, students and NIU instructors agree yoga is also good for the body.

“Yoga is wonderful for mind-body connection,” said Glenda Smith of NIU’s kinesiology department. “It is also good for flexibility. In the past, the football coach has called for his football players to take yoga to help stretch their hamstrings.”

Classes meet Tuesday from 4:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. in Activity Room 1 of the Recreation Center.
