Downtown shop is sk8ters paradise

DeKALB | Bright lights, music and unique wall paintings are just a few of the sights and sounds customers experience as they walk into Smltown Sk8board Shop.

The shop, located at 229 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb, is host to nearly all things skateboard-related.

The store offers apparel by brands such as Kayo and Natural Koncept. Currently, Smltown Sk8board Shop only sells T-shirts (which range from $12.50-$24.99), but pants and shoes will be coming soon, said owner Jason McLemore.

Among other things, Smltown Sk8 also sells skateboards and DJ equipment.

Complete skateboards run from about $70 to $200, and a starter set of DJ equipment starts at about $300 and can go for upwards of $2,000.

The store also offers a place to sit and play Xbox, and will eventually open a hair salon.

“We wanted to offer something to the youth of DeKalb, something to do,” McLemore said.

McLemore said he chose the downtown location to “stay centralized and be somewhere everyone can get to.”

Expansion and growth is in the cards for the store, McLemore said.

“We hope to grow. Have snowboards in the winter, more apparel, shoes,” he said. “We also want to be involved with all-age shows once or twice a month.”

Smltown Sk8board Shop is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.C
