SYCAMORE | Cinco de Mayo is upon us, and Sycamore is ready for the occasion.

Saturday marks Sycamore’s 10th annual Cinco de Mayo celebration. The event will run from 2 to 10 p.m. at Bill Johnson Boulevard, behind Taxco Restaurant Too, 223 W. State St.

It will feature games, carriage rides, raffle prizes, authentic Mexican food, a petting zoo, pony rides, various contests, 20 pinatas and live music from three different bands.

“From 2 to 6 p.m., the main focus will be on kids and family,” said Discover Sycamore director Kayte Hamel. “In the evening, it’s more of a party-type fiesta with drinks and live music.”

Admittance to the event is free. Food, drinks, game and raffle tickets can be purchased at an additional cost.

Taxco Restaurant has teamed up with Discover Sycamore, a division of Sycamore’s Chamber of Commerce, to provide the city an event that not only provides entertainment, but also benefits local nonprofit organizations.

“We see the needs of the organizations and work with them,” said Jesus Romero, owner of Taxco Restaurant and founder of Sycamore’s Cinco de Mayo event. “Over the past nine years, we’ve raised close to $50,000.”

Proceeds from this year’s event will go toward CASA, Kishwaukee College Scholarship Fund and DeKalb County’s community foundations Cinco de Mayo endowment.

“Investing in your community is the best investment you can do in your lifetime,” Romero said.

Romero said area businesses have been very supportive with monetary contributions and raffle prize donations.

“Well over 40 businesses have helped out,” Hamel said. “They’ve given financial support, donated raffle prizes, and most importantly, given of their time and energy. This event is completely run by volunteers throughout the day.”
