Car forced into fence on Colonial Apts. front lawn

DeKALB | Two cars collided on Annie Glidden Road east of the Lincoln Highway intersection just before 5 p.m. on Thursday.

“The Hyundai pulled out in front of two lanes of traffic; one waved him through, the other didn’t,” said Sgt. Wes Hoadley of the DeKalb Police Department.

The two cars collided and the Saturn careened off the road and onto the front lawn area of the Colonial Townhouses.

Hoadley said there was one person in each car.

“The gentleman in the Hyundai [had] minor abrasions to the face,” Hoadley said. “We took him to Kishwaukee. The guy in the Saturn was just shooken up.”

The driver of the Saturn, Jimi Geiyer, a junior visual communication major, said he was going west on Lincoln Highway, turning into the turn lane, when the Hyundai came out of Chipotle and hit him.

As Geiyer lurched across the lawn area, his brakes failed as he crashed through the fence and slid to a stop, avoiding a collision with the apartment building.

Residents of the Colonial Townhouses, Dalia Ascencio, a junior nursing student, and Rochie Vergara, a sophomore nursing student, were both home when the accident occurred.

“I just heard a big noise and didn’t think anything of it,” Ascencio said. “I saw the lights and it was the ambulance. I looked out and [the car] was all the way over here.”

Both Ascencio and Vergara said they hear sirens and loud noises often outside their apartment.

“The thing is we always hear sirens and things passing through here,” Ascencio said. “This is the first time we’ve seen this.”
