T-Mobile tower could come to University Plaza

DeKALB | The DeKalb Plan Commission will discuss plans for a T-Mobile wireless facility near campus.

T-Mobile is considering building a wireless facility on top of the University Plaza building’s penthouse at 900 Crane Drive.

The facility would be triangular with antennas flat against the structure on the north side, and antennas sicking three feet out on the southeast and southwest. These antennas would be painted to blend in with the building, but could possibly be seen from Annie Gildden and Russell roads.

There is a cell phone tower currently being used by Verizon Wireless that has room for potentially three other carriers, this option at the moment does not seem to have been explored quite yet, said T-Mobile engineer Sunjay Jaisingani. Using the tower would be an option for T-Mobile to have a wireless facility without antennas visible to the bare eye, said Darlene Hillman from Immanuel Lutheran Church.

“The number of users in this area are enough to push our facilities to the limit,” Jaisingani said.

The plan commission also conducted a work session on the rezoning of the DeKalb/Pond/Fisk neighborhood setting a neighborhood meeting for May 16, and a public hearing on May 30.
