DeKALB | DeKalb police found 29 cannabis plants in a DeKalb apartment Sunday morning.

Police responded to 505 S. 2nd St. Apt. 4 for a check well-being call. The complainant said a relative was at the apartment and drug use was possibly occurring.

Lt. Jim Kayes of the DeKalb Police Department said he does not see these calls often, but the department does receive them occasionally.

“It sounds to me that somebody called and they were concerned if [the relative was] doing drugs,” Kayes said.

Upon arrival, police spoke with the tenant, Steven B. Chemers, 55, of DeKalb and his guest, and were allowed into the apartment.

To obtain the drugs and paraphernalia in question, officers needed a warrant.

“The officers got a search warrant for the place,” Kayes said. “In order to get one, officers write the facts they know, what they saw, the judge signs it, and they go and get [the contraband].”

Police located 29 cannabis plants, one scale, pills, white powder, a water pipe, 12 grams of cannabis, one joint and one roach clip.

“The plants were just small seedlings,” Kayes said. “It looks like this guy was just getting started.”

Kayes said the white powder has not yet been identified by the department.

Chemers is charged with production of cannabis sativa, possession of cannabis and possession of paraphernalia. He was arrested at the scene and taken to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
