Criminal sexual assault

Two local cases of predatory sexual assault on a minor will culminate with sentences handed out in the next two months.

A Sycamore man will be sentenced May 25 for a conviction of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Craig Wilson, 37, of Sycamore, was found guilty March 21 on seven counts of predatory sexual assault of a child, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and two counts of indecent solicitation of a child.

Wilson was convicted of sexually assaulting a child at his home over a two-year period and faces between six and 30 years in prison. Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein tried Wilson’s case.

“Sgt. Anderson [of the Sycamore Police Department] did a terrific job of interviewing the child and bringing out the facts of the case,” Klein said.

It was the second case of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child decided by a DeKalb County jury this month.

On March 1, William Sargent, 37, of DeKalb was found guilty on four counts of predatory sexual assault of a child and two counts of criminal sexual abuse.

Sargent is convicted of sexually assaulting two children in his DeKalb home between June 2002 and December 2004.

Sargent faces life imprisonment because more than one victim was involved and is set for sentencing on April 20.

Klein also tried Sargent’s case and praised DeKalb Police Department Detective Mark Nachman for his work on the case.

“Detective Nachman did an excellent job in the investigation of this terrible crime and presented a clear and detailed presentation of his findings at trial,” Klein said.

Ron Matekaitis, DeKalb County State’s Attorney, said these cases are “far too frequent.”

Sexual crimes against children generally go to trial well after the abuse occurred because it is rarely reported immediately, Matekaitis said, adding that prior criminal history will be one of the determining factors in the sentencing of Wilson and Sargent.
