Get your heart rate up in the Rec’s AGT class

By Michelle Gibbons

Alanna Sluis, a sophomore nursing and athletic training major, teaches an AGT – abs, glutes and thighs – class on Mondays at the Campus Recreation Center, a class that combines cardio, step, aerobics, Pilates and stretching.

The class begins with warm-ups to increase the heart rate. This includes aerobics, using steps and weights and doing sets of lunges on and off the steps.

“We do a lot of step moves, like bringing the knees up to the chest, curling the hamstrings, while adding a little bounce to it to get your heart rate up,” Sluis said. “We also do leg stretches, lunges and weighted lunges.”

Sluis offers a variation for each exercise, from beginner to advanced levels.

Faster-paced Pilates and aerobic moves are also incorporated into the AGT class, and are structured around the music, which Sluis said is often a motivator for students.

Exercises using a stability ball are used from the middle to the end of class to strengthen the abs and lower body.

Though the class is meant to target the abs, glutes and thighs, Sluis said it gives students a great total-body workout.

Some of other the muscles targeted in AGT include the obliques, adductors and abductors in the legs, glutes, thighs and calves, she said.

“Toward the end, when we get on the floor and work with the body ball, you’re incorporating all your muscle groups,” Sluis said.

Sluis’ class on Mondays is taught from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. AGT is also available from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays. For more information on the AGT class, call the Rec at 753-0231.
