Police nab suspect in sex assault

DeKALB | The DeKalb police department arrested Juan Manuel Cruz-Gallardo early Monday morning after he allegedly tried to sexually assault a female NIU student.

According to DeKalb police, just before 7 a.m., an 18-year-old female student was asleep in a room at the fraternity house at 823 Greenbrier Road when she was accosted by Cruz-Gallardo. Cruz-Gallardo, recently of Honduras, is 26 years old and resides in the Greek Row area. Cruz-Gallardo is alleged to have unsuccessfully attempted to sexually assault the woman, who fought him off. He was later found hiding in the laundry room of the fraternity house, where he was arrested.

The woman was not seriously injured.

According to the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Cruz-Gallardo has been deported in the past.

Cruz-Gallardo is charged with home invasion, unlawful restraint, attempted criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Cruz-Gallardo also provided a false identity to the police, to which charges are pending.
