Candidate for 5th Ward out

By Greg Nicksarlian

DeKALB | The pool of potential alderman in DeKalb’s 5th Ward became a lot smaller Friday when the electoral board ruled Gavin Wilson’s name would be taken off the ballot.

In a 2-1 vote, the board decided petitions endorsing Wilson for inclusion on the ballot for the April 17 elections were not properly filled out. Mayor Frank Van Buer, 3rd Ward Alderman Steve Kapitan and city clerk Donna Johnson made up the board.

The decision leaves Ronald Naylor as the only candidate on the ballot for the 5th Ward.

The petitions were reportedly missing both the name and date of the election. Fifth Ward resident John Rey filed the objection.

Steve Kapitan voted against the ruling. He said the law is only general language and Wilson does have the option of appeal. However, Wilson is not considering an appeal or running as a write-in candidate.
