Barn turned house burns

DeKALB | A small barn that was converted into a house caught fire Monday at 12:55 p.m.

The DeKalb Fire Department responded to a second alarm call at 2975 S. Fourth St.

“It turned out there’s a small barn on the back of the property that was converted to a house,” said DeKalb Fire Chief Lanny Russell. “There was a fire in that house on the second floor.”

The fire started in an open area where pipes run – called a pipe chase – on the west wall of the building.

“Firefighters fought it on the interior and exterior,” Russell said. “We were able to go in and extinguish it.”

No injuries were reported and Russell said the building is salvageable.

“The fire is currently being investigated by DeKalb Fire Department investigators, the Office of the State Fire Marshall and the DeKalb County Sheriff,” Russell said.
