Not everyone happy after Mon. city council meeting

DeKALB | Monday’s DeKalb City Council meeting left one DeKalb resident unhappy with the handling of the decision to sell certain Mason Properties town homes.

The council passed the first reading of an ordinance to execute a development agreement regarding Lot 102 of Mason town home suites on Annie Glidden Road just south of Lincoln Highway.

“We had to find out about this in the newspaper,” said DeKalb citizen George Jaros. “We would like to know when changes are made.”

Third Ward Alderman Steve Kapitan said the council will be more conscientious about the level of communication between the city and the citizens.

The ordinance will be discussed in detail as well as voted on at the next meeting.

“We could tighten up and minimize the chance of this happening,” Kapitan said.

The council also welcomed two new DeKalb police officers: Elizabeth Fabro and Jeff Ackland. A third member of the police department was also introduced: Nick, a three-year-old German shepherd. Police Chief Bill Feithen said the new police dog will help the police department with stopping the trafficking of narcotics in DeKalb.

Mayor Frank Van Buer also addressed the downtown revitalization project. He said the task was going according to plan and that he saw a “revitalization of the spirit in DeKalb.”

The next city council meeting will be on Feb. 12.
