Oh, Christmas trees

DeKALB | Stars aren’t the only twinkling things lighting up the lives of DeKalb children this season.

For two days, Hopkins Park Community Center, 1403 Sycamore Road, will transform into a glittering holiday wonderland with decorated trees and other festivities. Jefferson Elementary School, 211 McCormick Drive, is proud to present its fourth annual “Festival of Trees and Holiday Craft Show,” to take place Dec. 1 and 2 at the Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Parking and admission are free, and all raffle proceeds go toward aiding Jefferson in areas involving new technology, playground upkeep and renovation, field trips and anything else the school’s regular funds don’t cover, event coordinator Allison Hess said.

“We expect nothing but positive things out of this,” said Hess. “It offers something wonderful for everyone.”

Hess said last year’s festival attracted a crowd of more than 2,000 and they’re hoping for an even larger crowd this year. The event will feature lavishly decorated trees and wreaths from a variety of sponsors and will provide attendees the opportunity to purchase holiday arts and crafts from a number of DeKalb’s area craft vendors. Other attractions include free face painting, pictures with Santa for $5 and a concession stand offering hot drinks and freshly baked cookies.

Music also is planned, with special holiday performances by Jefferson students and NIU student Mia Gormandy, a sophomore music performance major.
