Time to go for political signs

DeKALB | Political parties have two more days to take down any straggling campaign signs.

Each party is required to pay a $100 deposit to ensure the removal of all of its campaign signs within 10 days of elections.

If the signs are taken down within 10 days, the deposit is returned, but if the city must remove the signs, all or a portion of the deposit will be used to help pay for removal expenses. The city will also make the party pay a $50 fine.

Signs are only to be put up on private property and are disposed of if found on public property.

“I made myself responsible for picking the signs up,” said County Board Chair Ruth Anne Tobias.

Prior to putting out political signs, the director of community development must issue a temporary permit that grants permission to put signs up for 90 days.

“Sometimes they are thrown out if someone doesn’t pick them up within 10 days,” said Eileen Dubin, chair of DeKalb County Democrats.

Each party is responsible for disposing of the signs after they have been picked up.

“A lot of candidates hold them for future elections because they are expensive,” Dubin said.

DeKalb also has regulations regarding the size of each sign, which sets the limit at 16 square feet in area.

The regulations state that there cannot be more than 16 square feet in sign area for each 100 feet of frontage or any single lot, property or business.
