Life after 50-cent drafts

By Christopher Schimmel

DeKALB | The effects of the rise in the minimum liquor price will not be fully realized for some time, but businesses that have been serving 50-cent drafts have felt a change.

On Tuesday around 9 p.m., Fatty’s Pub & Grille, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway, looked like a popular place to be. People ordered drinks and socialized as usual, but this Tuesday night was different from the Tuesday nights before it.

This was the first Tuesday night since the rise in the minimum price of alcohol from four to eight cents an ounce.

The bar has started running other promotions, such as $1 domestic bottles of beer and some $1 mixed drinks to help maintain a consistent level of customer attendance.

The bar’s traffic increased throughout the night, but the management made it clear that business was slower.

Some customers have no problem sharing how opposed they are to the price hike.

Even though many of the customers are openly against the rise in price of alcohol, they are still showing up to drink.
