NIU offers mediation service

DeKALB | NIU Student Mediation Services offers students a confidential way to solve some issues college students may face, such as roommate problems and lifestyle differences.

As a part of the NIU Judicial Affairs office, Student Mediation Services allows NIU students a neutral, confidential outlet to discuss issues they may have with fellow students.

The most common issues the mediation service helps overcome are roommate disputes, relationship problems and friendship issues, said Kimberly Sackmann, Student Mediation Services coordinator. Other issues such as lifestyle and ethnic tension, noise, disruptive behavior or minor harassment can also be addressed through mediation.

The mediation process allow both parties to share their side of the dispute in confidence with a mediator. Mediators are all NIU College of Law students in their last year of school. All mediators have taken courses in alternative dispute resolution or mediation theory and practice, as well as practical training in mediation.

The mediator acts as an unbiased third party who listens to each side of the argument and works with each party to come up with a resolution. After reaching a resolution, a written agreement is made, stating how the parties are going to move forward so the issue does not escalate.

“Since the parties create their own agreement, they have ownership over the decision of how the relationship will go forward,” Sackmann said. “The mediator will not impose a decision on the parties; it is entirely up to them.”

To request mediation, students can call the mediation hot line. From there, a mediation representative will contact the other party and try to schedule a time for mediation. This appointment is completely voluntary and both parties make the final decision on whether or not to attend.

“If you are unsure of whether or not an issue can or should go to mediation, a student can always call and ask them,” Sackmann said. “I will be happy to help them decide whether or not mediation is right for the situation.”
