Burritos just got cheaper

FREE FOOD! The two greatest words for hungry NIU students and DeKalb residents.

This Friday, Chipotle is giving away burritos, burrito bols and soft drinks for free from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The catch: Only one item can be ordered at a time.

“You don’t have to disguise yourself,” said Chipotle manager Karen Melody. “Order one item at a time as many times as you want to stand in line.”

“Sweet!” said Zax Rosenberg, a freshman finance and law major. “I normally get four burritos when I come, but that gets kind of expensive. I am a starving college student after all.”

Melody explained the company’s reason for the promotion.

“We want to let everybody know we have great food, especially college students,” Melody said. “If we get food into people’s mouths, then they’ll keep coming back.”

Not much advertising has yet been seen, besides banners on the restaurant’s windows.

“The biggest way [this promotion] spreads is word of mouth, creating a buzz,” said Chipotle marketing general Bari Baskin.

Chipotle has increased ordering and staffing in preparation for the expected large crowd. This is not a standard grand opening promotion for every Chipotle.

“Only in locations where it makes the most sense and college campuses are definitely one of those places,” Baskin said.

The promotion would have been sooner if NIU had been in session before Chipotle’s grand opening.

“I’ve never eaten at Chipotle, but now I might,” said Anthony Galante, a freshman pre-pharmacy major.
