Rally changes hours of operation for businesses

Passion for immigration reform might have hindered some DeKalb residents’ efforts to pick up a hamburger or burrito Monday.

Burritoville opened late at 5 p.m. Monday, when their staff returned from an immigrant rights rally in the King Memorial Commons. Burritoville maintained its normal closing time of 2 a.m.

“Most of our staff went to the [DeKalb] rally — about nine people,” said Cassandra Woodyatt, manager of Burritoville, 1026 W. Hillcrest.

A bus departed from Burritoville Monday morning to head to Chicago’s march and rally.

“I don’t know if we were successful, but we tried and had fun at the same time,” Woodyatt said.

Many observers of the rally showed support through honking and picture taking, she said.

Another area restaurant did not have the same level of participation.

“Just one employee asked to go to the rally,” said Rosa Balli, manager of Rosita’s, 642 E. Lincoln Highway. “It’s as controversial issue, with pros and cons to both sides.”

McDonald’s franchises in and around NIU also altered their hours of operation, closing their dining room doors at 9 p.m. and their drive-thru at 10 p.m. Sunday, April 30 and Monday, May 1.

The change in schedule was announced with an 8.5″ by 11″ typed message posted on entrance windows:

“Sunday the 30th and Monday the 1st we will be closing our lobby at 9 p.m. and drive-thru at 10 p.m. We will be reopening Monday and Tuesday at 5 a.m. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you, Management”

The McDonald’s located in the Holmes Student Center was closed entirely May 1. The McDonald’s franchises on 545 E. Lincoln Highway and 805 W. Lincoln Highway both refused to comment on why business hours were shortened.
