UP happy with crosswalks

Last semester University Police ticketed pedestrians who failed to cross the street properly, particularly at Annie Glidden Road and Lucinda Avenue.

The goal was to decrease the number of pedestrian-related traffic incidents and to increase awareness that crossing improperly is a hazard and a violation, said UP Lt. Curtis Young.

“The intersection of Annie Glidden and Lucinda is a high traffic area, and we have to make people more aware,” Young said.

There has only been one incident this semester, when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in a parking lot, but other than that, Young said police have helped increase awareness of this issue. However, some disagree.

“I don’t think it has worked,” said Steve Pioppo, a senior communication major.

Pioppo said he can’t stand turning onto Annie Glidden from Lucinda because he gets stuck waiting for pedestrians to go across and almost hits pedestrians because they were not paying attention when crossing the busy intersection.

“Seriously, it’s like a video game, dodge the dorm kids,” Pioppo said.

Pioppo also said he has never seen someone get ticketed, and police can’t ticket all 30 pedestrians when they cross improperly.

Young, however, said officers don’t always give citations, but rather go out and stop people who are violating safety.

“Drivers also have the responsibility to be observant,” Young said.
