3 students temporarily suspended after fight

An altercation and underage drinking at the Sigma Pi fraternity house, 1114 Blackhawk Road, on Saturday is under investigation by the university to determine the proper consequences for those involved in the event.

“We look at the entire situation and all of the evidence we have,” said Brian Hemphill, vice president of Student Affairs.

According to the new Greek social policy instituted this year, all organizations must register social events with the university at least a week in advance. Saturday night’s social event was not registered.

“The entire organization, as well as specific individuals, will be held accountable for their actions in this altercation,” Hemphill said. “There are three individuals that have received immediate temporary suspension from the university.”

While the issue is being dealt with by both the DeKalb police and the university, the Interfraternity Council is investigating the incident and may take action.

“The way that the Interfraternity Council operates is the same way that any other organization on campus would operate,” said IFC president Patrick Reichel. “Obviously, state and federal laws will prevail; university rules and regulations will prevail as well.”

Reichel also said the IFC judicial board will investigate the matter.

“The judicial board can impose a variety of ramifications, including but not limited to fines, community service requirements and decisions in regard to the organization’s standing within the IFC.”
