Safe Passage holds domestic violence vigil

By Rasmieyh Abdelnabi

To commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Safe Passage is holding its 11th domestic violence vigil today from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the DeKalb Area Women’s Center, 1021 State St.

“We have this every year to bring attention to domestic violence and remember all of the victims,” said community resources director Cynthia Folgate.

The goal of the vigil is to let victims of domestic violence know help is available and they are not alone, she said.

The evening’s program will consist of an awards ceremony and Jennifer Welsh , the women’s policy adviser for the Illinois attorney general, will be honored for her work in helping victims of domestic violence. TAILS Humane Society and the DeKalb Christian Church will be recognized for the work it has done with Safe Passage.

A speech by a survivor of domestic violence and a candlelight walk around the block are also part of the event.

Hearing a survivor speak makes a person appreciate and be more grateful for what he or she has, Folgate said.

She said this event also helps to empower victims.
