The first official school week and weekend are over and already police have handed out almost 200 drinking tickets.

Law officials wrote 84 tickets between Friday and Saturday night, primarily along West Hillcrest Drive and Greenbrier Road.

Since the Aug. 18 move-in day, more than 170 tickets have been issued for open container violations, with each ticket carrying a minimum fine of $200. Do the math and you come up with a very significant sum: more than $34,000.

DeKalb police issued 592 drinking tickets in 2004. They gave out more than 500 tickets in 2003, more than double the previous year.

People also reported vandalism in various parts of the city during the weekend.

Police received one report Friday at 9:11 p.m. on the 800 block of Fotis Drive, when a glass bottle was thrown at a sliding glass door, breaking the door.

A similar report was made at 2:18 a.m. on the 800 block of Fotis Drive of a glass bottle thrown at a car window, shattering the window.

The worst damage occurred Saturday night around 8:16 p.m. on the 800 block of South Second Street, where the windshields of five cars were found smashed.

The cars were adjacent to each other and the windshields were broken in the same manner and place.

Vandals also spray-painted the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity house and a street sign on West Hillcrest Drive with green and red paint.
