Meals on Wheels gets temporary home

The DeKalb-area Meals On Wheels food pick-up site has been temporarily relocated due to extensive construction on Bethany Road.

The usual two-way traffic on Bethany Road has been slimmed to one-way from Peace Road to Route 23.

Many organizations volunteered their space for a temporary facility, but Doc and Marsha Royalty were chosen to host Meals On Wheels at their 4 Seasons Sports bowling alley and lounge, located at 1745 DeKalb Ave. 4 Seasons Sports is less than a mile from the regular facility on Bethany Road.

Not only does 4 Seasons Sports have a large parking lot, but it is only open in the late afternoon and evening, which allows its facilities to be used in the mornings and early afternoon. Volunteers still cook the food at the regular facility.

“We’re out of [4 Seasons] by 12:30 or 1 p.m.,” said Colleen Bredeson, volunteer at the temporary office.

Meals On Wheels volunteers deliver cold and warm meals to elderly clients. According to the Meals on Wheels Web site, it is the oldest and largest organization providing meals to people in need.

For Meals on Wheels, the motivation behind alleviating hunger is more than just the physical sustenance. Studies show that “cheerful and caring” volunteers bring recipients socialization they would not get otherwise.

Senior finance major Sara Bonnar is one of many student volunteers who deliver food for Meals on Wheels.

When asked what she finds most rewarding about delivering food with Meals On Wheels Bonnar said, “I guess the fact that you know you’re making someone’s day a little bit easier.”
