CPU tower taken from Stevens Annex

A black Central Processing Unit tower was discovered missing June 23 from the Stevens Computer Annex. University Police have no leads.

“To my knowledge, this has never happened before at NIU,” said Elizabeth Leake, associate director of customer support services for Information Technology Services.

Leake said all computer labs on campus have alarm systems, and the computers in the Stevens Annex are locked to the desks.

Leake was unsure if the lab attendant working the day the tower disappeared was in the building at the time of the robbery.

“It’s not unusual to see someone carrying or pushing equipment on a cart when walking around the campus,” said Lt. Matt Kiederlen of University Police. “Whoever took it could have blended in very easily.”

With the case open and the investigation ongoing, UP and school employees offered little information pertaining to the event.

“As long as it’s under investigation, there is not a lot we can say because it could jeopardize the case,” Leake said.

Anyone with information regarding the missing CPU tower can call the NIU Tip line at 753-TIPS. Useful information to the recovery of the tower may generate a cash reward of up to $100.
