Junior Wilson to be honored in finale

By Jarrod Rice

It’s senior night for the NIU women’s basketball team, but the Huskies will also honor what could be one junior’s final game.

Redshirt junior Jamie Wilson will most likely call it quits after this season due to extensive knee injuries suffered in 2002 and 2003.

“I play in pain every day,” said Wilson, who is set to graduate in December. “It’s not an easy decision, and as much as I love basketball, I need to move on.”

Wilson has had major surgery on both knees and does not want to risk her future outside of basketball.

“I’ve left the door open for Jamie, but this season will probably be her last,” NIU coach Carol Hammerle said. “She’s got a lot of heart, but it’s been a tough four seasons for her.”

Seniors Rachel Sillar and Alyssa Verdegan will also be honored before today’s game at 7:05 p.m. against Bowling Green at the Convocation Center.

Sillar and Verdegan both began at NIU in 2001 and have seen their roles increase of late with the loss of sophomore guard Mary Basic, who is out with a broken hand.

“I think that we will be sad that our careers are almost over, but we also need to focus on the game and step it up,” Sillar said.

The Huskies (7-19 overall, 4-11 MAC) lost to the Falcons 80-44 on Feb. 2 and will try to keep a repeat performance from spoiling the celebration.

The Falcons (19-7, 12-3) have won seven of their last eight games and can clinch the overall MAC regular season title and a No. 1 seed in the MAC tournament with a win tonight.

“It will be a very big game for us,” Wilson said. “The last time we played them was the worst game of the year for us, and we want to redeem ourselves and go out with a win.”
