Fight sends victims to hospital

A fight early Saturday morning in DeKalb sent three victims to the hospital, including one victim who suffered a collapsed lung after being stabbed during the altercation.

The stabbing victim was listed in serious condition at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, 5666 E. State St., in Rockford as of press time.

Police responded to a call received at 1:47 a.m. Saturday from an unknown origin about a fight taking place outside a party on the 1000 block of Spiros Court.

No arrests have been made and DeKalb police would not release the names of the victims, but police are investigating the incident.

“We have been talking to quite a few people,” said DeKalb olice Lt. Jim Kayes. “We got a lot of names and ideas on who the guy with the knife was. It is not finalized yet.”

Two other victims suffered injuries after being hit in the head and torso with a baseball bat. Both victims were taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital, 626 Bethany Road, where one victim was treated there and released. The other victim was later flown to OSF Saint Anthony as well, and later released.

“We know of at least a couple other people who were cut with a knife, on their hands and/or knuckles,” Kayes said. “It could have been an accident with them, it is hard to say.”

About 50 people were involved in the fight. Two groups of people, from Rockford and Lockport got into an argument, Kayes said.

“The argument started because someone apparently wanted to lay down and go to sleep,” Kayes said.

A fight ensued after the two groups were pushed out of the house, he said.

“Our main interest is in finding the guy who had the knife and stuck this guy,” Kayes said.

Although no one has been charged, it is possible that one person could be charged with aggravated assault and others with mob action.

“Him using a knife is not justified unless it is in defense of his life,” Kayes said. “If you are talking about a fist fight, that’s hard to justify.”

Theoretically, three or more people who get together to commit a criminal act can be charged with mob action, he said.
