Women’s hoops hosts W. Michigan

The Convocation Center hasn’t quite been home sweet home for the NIU women’s basketball team this season.

The Huskies are 2-9 at home and only one of those wins came in conference play.

NIU will hope to break that trend when it hosts Western Michigan at 7:05 p.m. today.

The Broncos (8-17 overall, 5-9 MAC) are 3-6 on the road this season and come into the game on a three-game losing streak.

“I think we are very similar teams in a lot of respects,” NIU coach Carol Hammerle said. “They pretty much go with seven players, but I think we have a little more depth and we’ll need to just keep going inside.”

The Huskies (6-18, 3-10) will have to find a way to contain senior forward Kelly Koerber, who is the reigning MAC West Player of the Week.

Koerber averages 17 points and is followed closely by sophomore guard Carrie Moore at 16.8.

“I think Moore is their go-to player,” Hammerle said. “They have Moore on the outside and Koerber is a banger on the inside and Kate Verseput isn’t bad either. Those three will challenge us.”

The Huskies have not won a game since Jan. 22 and have lost 10 of their last 11.

“I think we just need to look at ourselves right now and focus on our goal of winning,” Hammerle said.

Sophomore guard Stephanie Raymond leads the Huskies with 15.3 points per game.

WMU won both meetings with the Huskies last season and leads the all-time series 19-12.
