Women’s losing streak reaches 7

Every time the NIU women’s basketball team made a run, Toledo forward Danielle Bishop was there to stop it.

The Huskies led early, but couldn’t hold off the Rockets in a 64-55 loss on Wednesday at the Convocation Center.

Bishop scored eight points in the last 3:44, including a layup to give her team its final lead of the game. She finished with a game-high 25 points.

“We had no answers for Bishop and she single-handedly beat us,” said NIU coach Carol Hammerle, whose team lost its seventh in a row. “As soon as we would make a run Bishop had an answer and it was disheartening.”

A layup by senior guard Rachel Sillar put her team up 21-16 with 11:12 remaining, but the Huskies went on a dry spell from there.

The Huskies (6-17 overall, 3-9 MAC) failed to score a point for 10:46 until junior center Jennifer Uptmor converted a pair of free throws to end the drought.

Toledo, on the other hand, put together a 16-0 run during that span to give it a 34-23 lead at the half.

“Its hard not to look at the scoreboard and get frustrated when we can’t score,” said NIU guard Stephanie Raymond, who finished with 14 points. “It’s not due to us not taking good shots. The shots are just not falling.”

Raymond was held scoreless in the first half, but hit two consecutive three-pointers to bring the Huskies within five with 7:53 left in the game.

Raymond then converted a three-point play the old-fashioned way to tie the game at 51 with 5:02 left.

Toledo (12-11, 8-4) used a 13-4 run to close out the Huskies.

“We worked so hard to get back; then they just kept making threes,” said NIU forward Jamie Wilson, who had a team-high 17 points and seven rebounds. “We haven’t played well in the second half lately so we all wanted to play hard.

“We just need more composure and we need to take care of the ball.”
