Corn Fest to celebrate with events

By Jami Peterson

It’s that time of the year again when the corn begins to boil and the whole city comes out to celebrate.

Corn Fest ‘93 is just around the corner and the calender has already been set to provide all who attend with some new and improved events. The yearly celebration will take place Aug. 27 through Aug. 29.

Cameron Davis, publicity chairman of the event, said this year’s Corn Fest will provide all of the old favorites along with some new attractions.

“We’re just trying to improve what we have and add a few things,” Davis said. “We’re hoping to attract a lot of students this year.”

One new event this year is a night of Big Band sounds on Friday, Aug. 27 at the Sound Stage and a free screening of a restored classic movie at the Egyptian Theatre. The vocal jazz quartet Odyssey will kick off the Big Band night at 7 p.m., followed by the big band Shananigan which will perform until 9:30 p.m.

“The idea is to play big band music and give people the opportunity to dance,” Davis said. “The entertainment is going to be great.”

Davis said old-fashioned drinks will be served and antique cars will be on display to give Friday night a family-oriented theme.

Also this year, two round trip tickets to anywhere in the United States will be raffled off. Half of the profits from the $1 raffle will go to Barbland, the other half going to Cornfest. The winner of the raffle will be drawn at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
