Council picks redistricting plan

The DeKalb School Board redrew district lines for elementary school students at a meeting Tuesday night.

The board accepted the “Group A” proposal with two revisions and removed the middle school groupings originally planned.

The board moved 17 students from rural southwest DeKalb to Lincoln Elementary School, 220 E. Sunset Place, from Malta Elementary School in Malta.

The revision retained ten blocks in Lincoln Elementary School that otherwise would have been moved to Chesebro Elementary School, 900 E. Garden St. The blocks south of East Taylor Street and west of South Seventh Street from Chesebro Elementary School will remain at Lincoln Elementary School.

The changes allow for all overflow students – 43 this year – from Cortland Elementary School in Cortland to attend Chesebro Elementary School as they have in the past, School Board President Tom Teresinski said.

The move also will leave room for 77 students at Chesebro Elementary School and accommodate the English Language Learner program.

The board will have to analyze the new elementary districts before determining where to send students for middle school because of the “tweaking” accomplished at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The revised plan did not satisfy Board Vice President Suzanne Lambrecht. She said she would not vote for a plan that would not fully utilize Brooks Elementary School, 3225 Sangamon Road, and bus DeKalb students from The Knolls subdivision and University Village to Malta.

Lambrecht was the sole board member to vote down the new district lines.

The board has been grappling with the three proposals to balance the district population at the schools since the proposals were introduced Feb. 17.

The board held two public forums last week to allow for input from parents and citizens.

“They did a good job,” said parent Sue Schafer after the decision. “Obviously, they can’t please everyone.”

Parents now will know their options regarding the NIU partnership school, Wright Elementary School in Malta. Administrators will select personnel for the upcoming year and decide the logistics of the English Language Learner program.
