SA magazine raises debate

Huskie Highlights, the Student Association-funded magazine that was distributed for the second time Friday, received money Sunday to fund issues for next year.

The SA Senate allocated $30,925 for next year’s budget, which will fund six issues. SA President Shaun Crisler said the goal of the magazine is to highlight student organizations and their accomplishments.

Some senators raised objections to the magazine’s premise prior to the approval.

“The money that is going to this is absurd,” SA Senator Donna Dalton said. “The organizations that [the magazine] highlights could be given the money.”

Dalton and Sen. Douglas Reisinger voiced their disappointment about the magazine’s failure to live up to their expectations.

Reisinger questioned why the magazine featured stories about Valentine’s Day and Black History Month when the magazine was released near the end of February.

“I don’t know if we’re gonna see a St. Patrick’s Day thing at the end of March,” Reisinger said.

The first issue of the magazine, released after the end of this year’s football season, offered advice on how to get Huskies football tickets.

“The magazine has the exact same problem as last time,” Reisinger said.

One SA senator who defended the magazine said many members of the senate have not provided constructive criticism about the magazine prior to its release dates.

SA Sen. Hagar Allen implored members of the senate to take a more active role in offering advice.

“Let’s remember, this is not President Crisler’s Huskie Highlights,” Allen said. “It’s brought to you by us.”

Crisler said he also wanted senators to speak up about what they wanted to see from the magazine.

“We need senators like Senator Reisinger to step up to the plate,” Crisler said. “We need your help to do this.”

Crisler said he is working to decrease the money the magazine utilizes from the SA. He offered some suggestions, such as sending the magazine by e-mail, which could eliminate the $3,200 printing budget.

Also, he said the magazine is actively looking for advertisers to help supplement the cost of putting out the magazine.

The most recent issue featured stories on Black History Month, studying abroad and the Campus Activities Board’s new executive election openings. The magazine was set to be released early in February but was pushed back because submissions were past deadline.
