Second company looks at Park 88 site

A second, unnamed company is looking at the Park 88 site that Lowe’s is considering for a 1.3 million-square-foot distribution center.

The DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation asked the DeKalb School Board Monday to consider offering the second company the same tax abatement program it offered Lowe’s.

The second company would operate a location similar to the one Lowe’s is looking to build, said Roger Hopkins, DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation executive director.

The company would offer higher wages than Lowe’s, starting between $11 and $13 per hour up to $17 per hour for more experienced workers, Hopkins said.

“They’re both extraordinarily large projects at 1.4 million-square-feet,” Hopkins said. “The second company is more appealing because it offers more professional jobs.”

Office workers would account for 10 to 12 percent of the 1,000 people that would be employed, Hopkins said. Company officials showed interest in local executive-level housing, he told the school board.

The company is of similar caliber as Lowe’s, Hopkins said, and is included in the Fortune 50 list.

Lowe’s is expected to announce its plans within the next week, Hopkins said. If Lowe’s decides to move to Park 88, he said, the second company would not necessarily be excluded.

The board said in a straw poll that it would support offering the same tax break package to the second company and will consider formally passing the package at its March 29 meeting.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the board continued to grapple with redistricting elementary students.

When the board approved the new district boundaries, it had to remove the proposed boundaries for middle school students to allow for minor, last-minute changes to the elementary school redistricting plan.

Now the board has to decide which elementary schools will feed the district’s two middle schools.

The board decided to reconvene the redistricting committee to consider middle school attendance boundaries and have them report at the March 29 meeting.
