Intra-squad game kicks off ‘93 slate

By Brian Wiencek

How about these matchups for a football game?

Coaches Joe Dickinson vs. Gary Evans.

Quarterbacks Scott Crabtree vs. Ron Reichert.

Kickers Brian Steger vs. Brian Steger?

Confusing. Yet, that’s what the fans will get a chance to see tomorrow when the NIU Annual Black_White Intra-Squad Football Game kicks off at Huskie Stadium at 1:05.

Last Monday, NIU coaches gathered to conduct an NFL-style draft to split up the team into two squads.

The results will see Team Black possess an experienced offense, but a young defense. Senior-to-be Scott Crabtree will start at quarterback, while returnees Vaurice Patterson (split end), Jeff Wroblewski (tight end), George Anthony (fullback), Tyrone Leverett (tailback) and Sean Algood (flanker) will all receive starts as well.

On the defensive side, some familiar names include C.J. Rose at outside linebacker, Chad Smith at free safety and Eddie Davis at cornerback.

For Team White, sophomore-to-be Ron Reichert will start at quarterback. Again, several returning Huskies will pop up on this squad. Steve Rodgers (flanker), Alton Francis (tailback), Brian Cotton (fullback), Raymond Roberts (tight end) and Otha Brooks (split end) will showcase the offense.

Defensive responsibilities will be in the hands of returnees Paul McAndrews (left end), Steve Wild (linebacker), Larry Williams (linebacker), Tony Smith (linebacker), MacArthur Griffin (cornerback) and Eric Lacy (free safety).

Senior-to-be All-America candidate LeShon Johnson will dress for this Saturday’s activities, but he will not participate because NIU head coach Charlie Sadler does not want to risk injury to the tailback.

This game will give the fans a preview of what to expect in the upcoming 1993 inaugural Big West season. Listening to Sadler, fans might want to expect a lot.

“I know I made some statements last year that some people felt were maybe somewhat too high from an expectation standpoint,” said Sadler. “But we were pretty much on line with what I said … Our plan, our goal is to line up in Las Vegas in December and play in the bowl (Las Vegas Bowl). Quite frankly, this football team will settle for nothing less.”

NIU has created an atmosphere almost similar to that of a regular season football game. Tailgating begins at 10:30. The Huskies will conduct a seminar at 11:30 a.m., and the players, coaches and cheerleaders will hold autograph/photo sessions at 3 p.m. All admission is free.
